Caution must be used in choosing limestone for countertops or vanities as it stains and scratches more easily than granite. It is the softest natural material available.

TRAVERTINE begins as porous limestone that naturally fills in. It has large quantities of calcium carbonate formed by calcium rich hot springs that bubble up, and then cool down. Tavertine is an ornamental stone popular for flooring, vanities, or in bathroom applications in various colors.

Granite is a natural product, and is subject to variation in color, shading and veining. Every sample as well as slab will vary to a certain degree, some stone more than others.

Granite is a natural igneous rock composed of 25% to 35% of quartz and 50% of feldspars, with a common accessory mineral of less than 20%.

Heat resistance of granite is excellent. Putting a hot frying pan on a granite top will not leave any mark or scar on the surface.

Abrasion resistance of granite is very high. It is not easy to scratch the surface of a granite top. Granite is actually harder than stainless steel. The only way you can scratch a granite top is using something just as hard or harder. For example, granite can scratch granite or dragging a box with sand on the bottom over the granite top can scratch the granite top.

Even though granite is hard, it is somewhat brittle. Putting heavy weight on the center of a piece of unsupported long granite can cause a crack.

The porosity of granite is relatively low. As with any material, however, if a spill is left on the surface for a long period of time some residual staining may occur. The stain might dissipate over time or it can be removed with a Stainout Poultice Powder or a cleanser "Vim with bleach". To prevent the potential settling of a stain, the granite surface should be sealed with a penetrating granite sealant or impregnating sealant.

Granite is a better material for countertop than marble. Marble can be scratched quite easily and can stain much easier than granite.

Granite is quite heavy. For the ¾" thick granite slabs, the weight is about 12 lb per square foot. A slab measured 120" by 72" would weigh about 720 lb.
